    Why do you API?

    e-conomic API

10-15% of our customers have the e-conomic API switched on.  It’s a free option and, like all of the e-conomic add-on modules, you can switch it on whenever you want, you don’t have to ask us to do it for you.

Unfortunately, this means that we have little or no idea what people are using it for!  There are some publicly available integrations listed on our web site, but I reckon there are many great examples that we’ve never heard of and other users would be interested to hear about.

The blog is a great way for people to share experiences and ideas, so please add a comment about how you are using the API and what benefits it brings to your business.

    1. We’re using the API for automated sales invoice creation from our e-commerce back-end. So now, when an order is placed on our website the customer records and invoice are automatically created in e-conomic. The ability to do this was our main requirement for an accounting platform but everything we looked at was woefully inadequate for multi-currency automated imports. E-conomic was the exception with it’s impressive API.

Marcus – thanks for the response. Do you use a package for your e-commerce back-end, or a home-built system?

    3. Hi Mark. Our e-commerce back end is home-built.

We use the API to integrate with our purchases, cart, order creation and stock. Also for our local admin systems to look up customer details and customer balances.
I find there are a few limitations with it though. Like some of the things that we would find most useful is finding a customer by a phone number, and being able to update stock through the API (when importing new products from a database or csv file etc.)
But all in all it’s pretty good, and the speed seems to have improved lately over what it was at the beginning!

Hi Luke – we will one day extend the scope of our API so that all of the functionality in add-on modules will be accessible, making it possible to maintain stock and may other things.

Is your web-shop home grown or a package? We’re always getting enquiries about which web shop software has been integrated with e-conomic.
