    Changing your year end

e-conomic often surprises me by making it really easy to do things that you think are going to be hard or even impossible.  Just last week I learned something new while answering the question of a customer who wanted to change the number of periods in their current accounting year.  In some systems this might be impossible, but with e-conomic you can do it easily.

In e-conomic, an accounting year can be between 6 and 18 months long, allowing you to have a shortened or extended accounting year if you ever need to adjust your year end.  If you have already created an accounting year and now want to change it, simply create the accounting year you want and, if it overlaps with one that already exists, the system automatically moves the relevant periods from the existing year into the year you’ve created.

    An example…

    New accounting year button

Assume the current accounting year is 01.01.09 to 31.12.09, but you want to change the year end to 31st October.  Use the “New accounting year” button to create an accounting year from 01.11.09 to 31.10.10.  The new year will be created and the existing year will be reduced by two periods so that it ends on 31.10.09.

Or if you want to change the year end to 31st March, use the “New accounting year” button to create an accounting year from 01.01.09 to 31.03.10.  The existing accounting year will be extended by three periods so that it ends on 31.03.10.

Any existing entries in the periods being moved from one year to another will keep their existing date but will now relate to the new accounting year instead of the old one.
